How Does Austin Really Stack Up? Let’s Just Say... We’re Doing Pretty Dang Well
Spoiler alert: Austin’s not just weird — it’s winning.
If you’ve been wondering how our beloved Capital City ranks compared to the rest of the country (and beyond), it turns out… we’re kind of crushing it. From healthiest city rankings to best nightlife, best coffee, and even how often we swear — here’s how Austin stacks up from 1 to 10, according to recent studies.
🟩 #1 – Best State Capital to Live In
According to WalletHub, we’re literally the best state capital to call home. Shoutout to our solid economy, high-quality healthcare and education, and that ever-elusive work-life balance. Sorry Madison and Raleigh — we’re booked and busy.
📎 Bonus wins: Best nightlife (per Stacker) + highest rent drops (hi Redfin).
🟩 #2 – Healthy and Happy
Austin ranks #2 healthiest major city in the U.S. (just behind San Jose) thanks to low rates of high blood pressure and diabetes. Also: #2 most dog-friendly city in the country. Because of course we are.
🟩 #3 – Most Underrated City
A jury of 1,000 Americans said we’re criminally underrated. We love being the underdog… until we’re not. Also: #8 food scene in the U.S., which feels low TBH, but we’ll take it.
🟩 #4 – Hybrid Work Heaven
Roughly 1 in 3 Austinites work from home. Which tracks, considering how many laptops you see at Cosmic Coffee. We’re the #4 best city in Texas for hybrid work — right behind Sugar Land, Plano, and Frisco (they had to let the suburbs win something).
🟩 #5 – Party Central
We’re not just the best city to party in the U.S., we’re also the 5th best in the world according to Time Out — up there with Berlin and Rio. Yes, that’s correct. Berlin. Rio. Austin. Let that sink in.
Also, U-Haul says we’re a top growth metro, so people are clearly moving toward the fun.
🟩 #6 – One Big Playground
WalletHub says we’re the #6 Most Fun City in America, based on everything from movie ticket prices to brewery hours. We say: duh.
🟩 #7 – International Business Boomtown
Financial Times and Nikkei ranked Austin the #7 best city for international business. We’ve got the workforce, the innovation, and clearly, the vibe.
🟩 #8 – Brain Power
We’re the #8 most educated metro in the U.S. — and the smartest in Texas. Just saying.
Also #8 best city for college grads to launch their career. So if you’re a parent reading this, you're welcome.
🟩 #9 – Caffeine Capital
Coffee lovers, rejoice. We’re ranked #9 for best coffee cities in the U.S. based on number of cafes per capita. Basically, there’s a solid flat white waiting for you within arm’s reach at all times. (Don’t skip my favorites — I’ve got a guide for that.)
🟩 #10 – Slightly Potty-Mouthed, But Lovable
According to Preply, Austinites swear an average of 19 times per day, landing us in the #10 spot for America’s sweary-est cities. I mean… we’ve all sat in I-35 traffic, so fair.
📎 Bonus: We’re also the #10 best city for singles. Coffee, cursing, and a good time? Sounds like a first date.
Whether you’re here for the tacos or the tech scene, one thing’s clear: Austin brings the heat — and we’re not just talking summer temps. 🌞
