One of the most common conversations I have with buyers relocating to Austin doesn’t actually start with homes — it starts with confusion. People come in asking, “What’s the best neighborhood?” or “Where should we live?” and while those are valid questions, they’re usually not the right starting point.
I’m Jennifer Martin, a Realtor in Austin, and a big part of my work is helping people moving here reframe how they approach the search. Austin has grown so quickly over the past decade that it’s no longer a city where one or two neighborhoods define the experience. It’s a collection of very different pockets, each offering a completely different lifestyle.
What I’ve found is that the buyers who have the best experience aren’t the ones who start with location — they’re the ones who start with clarity. They understand how they want to live day to day. Do they want walkability? Space? Proximity to downtown? Access to trails? A strong sense of community? A shorter commute?
Once those priorities are clear, the neighborhoods start to make sense.
For example, someone who thinks they want “Austin” might actually feel much more at home in Dripping Springs, where there’s more space and a slower pace. Another buyer might initially look at suburbs but realize they’d prefer something closer in like South Austin or even parts of East Austin depending on their lifestyle.
Austin isn’t a one-size-fits-all market anymore. It rewards buyers who take the time to understand themselves before trying to understand the city.
Helping people work through that process is one of the most valuable parts of what I do, because once that foundation is set, everything else becomes much clearer.
