This month, I helped three different families relocate to Central Texas.
At first glance, they had almost nothing in common.
They didn't know each other.
They weren't referred by the same people.
They came from three different parts of the country—California, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C.
They served in different branches of the military.
One came from Coronado.
One from Fort Bragg.
One from the Washington, D.C. area after retiring from military service.
And yet, after spending time getting to know each family and what they were looking for, something interesting happened.
All three ended up in Dripping Springs.
Why?
The answer surprised a lot of people.
It wasn't because Dripping Springs had the cheapest homes.
It wasn't because of the schools—although Dripping Springs ISD is exceptional.
It wasn't because of the views—even though they're incredible.
It was because these families were looking for something that's becoming harder and harder to find.
Space.
Privacy.
Freedom.
They wanted backyards where kids and dogs could run until sunset.
They wanted enough land to set up an archery target.
They wanted to be close to outdoor recreation, shooting ranges like Hog Heaven and Reveille Peak Ranch, and the Hill Country lifestyle that reminds many of the places they've loved throughout their military careers.
Most importantly, they wanted homes without someone telling them what they could and couldn't do with their own property.
For these families, that mattered.
A lot.
Even more interesting?
All three are now working in Austin's rapidly growing defense technology industry.
While much of the national conversation about Austin's tech scene focuses on autonomous cars, AI startups, and delivery robots, another industry is quietly experiencing explosive growth.
Defense technology.
Austin has become one of the country's fastest-growing hubs for companies building autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, aerospace technology, and next-generation defense platforms.
These companies are actively recruiting experienced military leaders, engineers, pilots, operators, and planners from across the country.
And many of those professionals are choosing to build their next chapter right here in Central Texas.
Despite coming from different states, different military backgrounds, and different companies, each of these families reached the same conclusion.
A beautiful home in Dripping Springs.
A manageable commute of about 30 minutes to downtown.
A place where they could slow down, put down roots, and give their families room to grow.
As someone who has now helped multiple military and defense-tech families make this transition, I'm starting to notice patterns.
The priorities are different.
They're looking beyond granite countertops and trendy zip codes.
They're looking for community.
For freedom.
For land.
For lifestyle.
For a place that feels like home after years of serving somewhere else.
Austin's defense-tech industry is only getting started, and I believe we'll continue to see more incredible families making this move over the coming years.
If you know someone who's retiring from the military, transitioning into the private sector, or relocating to Austin for one of these exciting new opportunities, I'd love to be a resource.
Whether they're still deciding where to land or already have an offer in hand, I'm always happy to have a conversation about neighborhoods, commute times, schools, and finding the right place to begin their next mission.
